Look, Just…. don’t be afraid to talk to people- they’re just people. But don’t dump all your problems on someone who hasn’t specifically said they’re happy to listen to anything you have to say. Please? It’s stressful.
See, here’s the thing. I’ve thought about that before. The only issue is that I began to run into some problems when I was thinking of them. Lemme see if I can lay out my concerns with it.
1. Getting people involved/interested.
You can’t have an O.C.T. without people participating. Now, I dunno how many people would actually be interested in taking part in one of these. Lots of people have stuff going on that would prevent them from taking part, or to hit deadlines set by the tournament itself. Having people who are interested in seeing one unfold is also important, as feedback from an audience is necessary. Also, you can’t have a tournament without people watching, right?
2. Characters.
Okay, I’m not trying to rag on anyone who has these types of characters. They’re your own creations, so all power to you, but I just know that if we were to let people submit anything, they’d do something like that picture up there. That wouldn’t work. If you have a character that can’t be killed because they’re literal gods, then what’s the point? If a character is perfect, then they’re boring and not fun. Lots of people might understand this and think, “oh, well that’s a given. No overpowered characters should be a no brainer.” But they don’t get that there’s also a lot of people who would send in a neon rainbow alicorn with leopard spots and expect to get in. Then you have to tell them they weren’t chosen to be a part of it for “x” reasons, and then we kinda segway into the next issue.
3. Popularity
“You only picked them because they have a lot of followers!” “They only won that battle because you’re friends with them!” “The only good thing about them is their art! My character is way better!” “Let’s send hate mail to them because they’re obviously in cahoots with that judge, and they’re only winning because of that!” “They only beat me because they’re more popular than I am!” Etc, etc, etc. Feelings are very fragile things, especially with some people in this community. If a person’s character is rejected for the tournament, they might take it as a personal attack and lash out to the people involved. What they don’t realize is that if they’re going to join something like this, then there is a possibility that, yes, another person’s character will beat theirs out. Maybe that person is popular in the community. Maybe that person is friends with one of the judges. Who knows. But at the end of the day, it’s just a fun tournament. It’s not like it’s going to set the course for your life. Unfortunatley, some people don’t understand that.
4. Setting.
This one isn’t really that much of an problem. I’ve been coming up with little settings for things since middleschool. Picking the right one is really the biggest issue I’d face. Good OCTs have some kind of story going along with the normal tournament, with it’s own characters that may interact with the OCs during the event. Those are more difficult to do, but not impossible.
Those are really the main issues I have with doing one. If enough cool people wanted to take part in something like that, ( “cool” being someone who doesn’t take things too seriously and has fun doing things ) then yeah. I’d 100% be down to do one. It’s all a matter of the right people getting involved. I don’t know what else to say, so I dunno. Lemme know what you think? Would you wanna see an OCT happen? Would you want to take part in one?
Hey Nips, just a quick question. If someone wanted to get sexual pairing art with their character and one of yours (such as Beauty Mark or Nikita) would you be okay with that?
